“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it whether you get up.”

– Vince Lombardi

writing the dream

Roswell is one of the greatest places to live. With warm, friendly people and great sports. I was the sports editor for the Roswell Daily Record for four years. I left for the opportunity to travel the state and write the stories I wanted to tell. There are a lot of sports stories and legacies that need to be unpacked and told. Plus, my mother loves the shopping, people and green chili… And not in that order.

Tough football teams

Goddard- needs big season from Morales

Goddard must replace all-state lineman Larry Luna. Luna is plying his trade at the University of New Mexico this season. Goddard coach Chris White has three starters on the offensive line returning, and he will need that experience to help break loose all-state candidate Javyn Morales. Morales is one of the fastest players in the state. Goddard is a run heavy team that might throw 10 passes a game. If they get into a throwing contest it means they are behind. Under White, even when they are behind by two scores he has stuck with run. Goddard cannot afford to fall behind in games this season with such a daunting schedule.

Maupin looks to toughen up Bulldogs

The church was preaching to the choir, when former head coach Rex Henderson announced that he was resigning to spend more time with his family. Henderson spent less than five seasons on the sidelines, but won the 30th state title for Artesia. Look for former quarterback Jeremy Maupin to have the team playing for a championship within the next couple of years. In order to do that, Maupin will need to shore up the defense. Artesia could always score, but had trouble stopping the run and seemed to have problems with the physical teams such as Goddard. One thing Maupin is going to have to do immediately is win the Eddy County War. The nonconference games are never easy and seem to be a warmup to the district games.

Title or bust

Arturo Duran is making himself a living legend in Dexter. Duran won a state title as a quarterback for the Demons. In his first year under the headset, they won it all. He is on the short list of coaches that have won the Blue Trophy as player and coach. Dexter has gone from a ball control team, to a team of video game exploits. The Demons want to strike in a hurry. Last year the team put up as many points in the shortened season as they did in their championship year. Dexter returns several all-state players.

Great times and people

Football fans cannot get enough of their local teams: Gateway Christian, Eunice, Hobbs, Lovington, Tatum and pictured in the green, Hagerman. Hagerman has coach Guy Rivers and the folks in the tiny town of Hagerman talking state championship. It has been a while since that title was in the trophy case at the school. Roswell supports the history and tradition of the proud high school football teams of the NMMI Colts and Broncos. The Broncos made a Bowl game last year, and the year before, the Colts made the high school playoffs. Roswell also shares with world the talents of LPGA golfer Gerina Piller and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.
